Accommodation

OUR ACCOMMODATION

If you love remote, you'll love the accommodation at Glenhead, 2 miles east of Loch Trool.

The Lodge

The Lodge, which sleeps 10 people making it perfect for large families or groups, has 5 bedrooms (3 singles and 2 bedrooms that sleep 4, each with 2 single beds and 2 double beds). We supply the pillows only, so please bring your own bedding. There are toilets, showers and wash hand basins, a kitchen with a large stainless steel double sink, 2 gas cookers, a microwave, toaster and kettle. In addition, the Lodge is equipped with crockery, pots, pint and half pint glasses, wine goblets, whisky glasses and general tumblers, dish cloths, washing up liquid and hand cleanser liquid. There's always plenty of hot water. Heating is provided via a large log burner for the colder weather and all bedrooms have central heating whilst all toilets have towel radiators.

A washing machine is also available but no tumble dryer; in an off-grid location, the system couldn’t cope with the power required, but a long clothing line and drying room are on-site. Glenhead is quite literally off-grid, so has a solar system which supplies the power combined with a back-up generator. There are also tying rails for about 12 bikes at the Lodge. Glenhead really is perfect for shutting out the outside world as there is no TV and only a limited phone signal available on O2, but not so good on Vodafone. The Lodge has parking for four cars.

Facilities at The Lodge:

  • 2 fridges with freezer boxes and a large upright freezer
  • A drying room with its own wood burner and plenty of hooks for drying boots and clothing when out in cold wet weather.
  • 2 shower rooms with toilets, shaver points and wash hand basins.
  • 2 additional shower rooms with wash hand basins and shaver points.
  • 2 toilets with wash hand basins and shaver points.
  • The Lodge is double glazed and fully insulated and has a full fire alarm system
  • Outside, there are 2 large picnic benches seating 12 and 2 smaller benches
  • A large ranch-style fenced area for barbecuing. A 4-ring barbecue with gas is available. (Please note: Open fire barbecues are not permitted in the Galloway Forest.) These areas overlook outstanding views of the Galloway Hills.

There is also a small hut with drying facilities and a veranda with views of the Galloway Hills. A barbecue will be provided with gas (no open fires are permitted in the Galloway Forest). Did you know?

Scottish author Samuel Rutherford Crockett visited the McMillan Family at Glenhead in the late 1800s and wrote some chapters of his books including The Raiders. Samuel wrote the following about Glenhead, "I saw for the first time in the broad glare of a mid-noon sun, all the valley swam in a hazy blue mist and the heat smote down from the white lift as through the glass of a hothouse."
