There is also a pod (sleeps 2) and a Shepherd’s Hut which also sleeps 2. Glenhead, which is located in a Site of Special Scientific Interest, is regularly visited by pine martens, foxes, badgers, red deer, red squirrels and birds of prey, so you won’t be entirely alone during your stay!

Living off-grid in the heart of Britain's largest forest is a truly magical experience. The Galloway Forest in south-west Scotland is home to a wide variety of wildlife from spectacular birds of prey to pine martens and increasingly rare red squirrels. You may even get to meet badgers, foxes, wild goats, red and roe deer, golden eagles, buzzards, owls, woodpeckers, jays and magpies during your stay!

Getting to Glenhead, in the heart of the Galloway Forest.

The tarred road is good from Glentrool village to Bruce’s Stone on Loch Trool, approximately 4 miles. The last 1.5 miles is on a Forestry track and is not suitable for low-slung cars. Please note, there is no access from Loch Dee to Glenhead. 

  • From the Border, leave the M6/M74 at Gretna and join the A75 past Annan, Dumfries and Castle Douglas heading towards Stranraer. After 71 miles, turn off the A75 roundabout into Newton Stewart and head through the town joining the A714 to Girvan. After 12 miles, turn towards Glentrool at Bargrennan. Just past Glentrool village turn right where it's signposted for Bruce's Stone and Loch Trool. To reach Glenhead Lodge, Ca’the Yowes Shepherd Hut and our Wee Pod, you will pass Bruce’s Stone and soon enter the Ancient Sessile Oak Woods and pass the Gairland Burn Waterfall, travelling along the forest track for around 1.5 miles until you reach Glenhead.
  • From the Central Belt, head south on the M74 and take the Dumfries turn off at Beattock and take the A701 to Dumfries through Locharbriggs and Heathhall before joining the A75 towards Stranraer.
  • From Ayrshire, take the A77 to Girvan and join the A714 signposted for Newton Stewart. Turn left at Bargrennan for Glentrool village and Loch Trool. The Postcode for SatNavs is DG8 6SU.
